Tuesday… Katie Graduates (and autumnal storms!)

PheasantsNo, the two are not related, but it has been very wet and windy down here in Hampshire for the last couple of days. The rain has cleared off most of the remaining leaves from the trees, and left them in a big soggy patch on the lawn. NuthatchHowever it hasn’t been all bad news, these two pheasants were spotted rooting in the leaves for some seeds from the bird feeders – the blue tits and this nuthatch (I think!) seem very hungry too.

KatieBut the big event in an otherwise uneventful week was Katie’s graduation ceremony from Bournemouth University at Bournemouth International Conference Centre, last Wednesday, where she was awarded a 2:1. Congratulations Katie!

Apart from that, I have been continuing with the odd jobs around the house – a little plumbing last week replacing some basin taps.

Next health activity is later this month for another ECP session – so… onwards and upwards!

Sunday… dreary nights :(

I hope you all remembered to put the clocks back to GMT this morning! And claimed your extra hour in bed! I didn’t as I had my ‘flu jab yesterday. Whether that was the cause, I don’t know, but I didn’t sleep very well.

But apart from that, it has been an uneventful week. Having cancelled my trip to France in the hope of an interview, nothing materialised, but the week hasn’t been wasted as I have done one or two little tasks round the house. Health wise all seems OK. I had a report from the hospital on my last blood test, which although wasn’t commented on specifically, appears that the liver enzyme is further reduced. Still elevated, but much lower than it has neen. Nothing official on the ultrasound yet.

So I am sitting in my study looking at a dreary and rapidly darkening landscape – Felicity has been away most of the week, initially with a friend, latterly with her mother, but she should be back fairly soon, so perhaps it is time to go and light the fire!

Thank you all for your comments on the last post – I think I have replied in the last one!

Onwards and upwards!

Saturday… Lots of catching up!

Phew, where to start? It has been a couple of weeks since I last “blogged” so there is quite a bit of catching up to do!

The biggest adventure was a 12 day trip out to France with friend Mark, to his house for a working party. We drove over on Monday the fourth via Brittany Ferries. It is a longer crossing than the catamaran (not running since it had a close encounter with a buoy in the harbour at Le Havre!) So we were delighted to find another piece of French motorway had been completed, giving continuous motorway to within about 10 miles of the house. Not counting stops, we completed the journey in just under six hours.

CarIt was a working week so we had trips to the various ‘bricolages’ for wood and components to add a new window to one external wall, change an external door for a more modern one, remove a fireplace and move an internal wall. For some of the work, a neighbour of Mark’s (in France – Ben, a Dutchman) came and assisted, while I did other necessary jobs like mowing the lawns, making coffee, preparing food and so on.

We made good progress getting the window installed, and almost completing the one door, and moving an interior stud partition wall before we flew back, leaving Mark’s car at the airport.

houseIt wasn’t all work, we did go out for a meal or two, and Mark’s wife flew out for the weekend. I did little local exploring in the woods nearby. All went well until the last bit where I lost my bearings, and rounding a corner in a field, came face to face with a ‘Limousin’ cow. I beat a quick retreat, climbed up a bank – and found myself in Mark’s back garden – I had just walked round the house and not seen it!Lintels

After I arrived back on Friday 15th, we had a visit from Martin and Stephanie, friends from University. We met up at Beaulieu, and went out for a meal (thank you Martin!) with a trip to the apple fair at “The Vyne” National Trust House near Basingstoke. They left on Sunday morning, and on Monday I was off to London for a postponed ECP session.

apple_fairThat went smoothly as expected and I was home on Tuesday evening. I did have an appointment at the eye clinic, and my eyes are much better, so I am now using less aggressive eye drops – but still not able to wear contact lenses 🙁

I had a slight “wing mirror” encounter on Friday night, just clipping it as I passed another car on a narrow bridge. This popped the glass out, but it was retained by the heating element wires, so I thought it would click back in. Alas no, there was a part that had dropped out, and when I went to buy the replacement part, I was told I had to buy a complete motor assembly. Ouch! I ordered that on Wednesday and collected it on Thursday, and fitted it that morning. You don’t realise how much you use the external mirrors until one is missing.

TrafalgarThursday saw me driving up to Corsham for a dinner to celebrate the glorious victory of Admiral Lord Nelson at Trafalgar. An excellent evening with many old friends present. On Friday I drove up to see my parents.

However on the way I stopped off to see the people at LeukaemiaCARE. I haven’t done very much with them lately, but I am going back to help on the 24 hour careline, so it was good to drop in and catch up with some new faces and (Meg!) And discuss “stuff” :). So a hello to Tony, Dawn, Nikki, Veronica, Tricia, Meg, Mike, Steve and Becks. And see you all again soon I hope.

HailSo I am at my parents having a break- the weather was lovely this morning – we have just had a hailstorm! I had been hoping to go back to France with Mark on Monday, but last week I was approached by an agency with a possible contract offer. MY CV has been submitted, and interviews are this week. I don’t know if I will be called for interview, but it is worth waiting to see. It will be for about 40 days of work, which will be useful!

I have lots of photos as well – only a sample here – which will be on the Gallery when I have uploaded them.

So on all fronts – Onwards and Upwards!

Friday… Mending Road (with apologies to Robert Frost)

Repairs 1It has been a few days since I updated this – perhaps the most notable occurrence was waking up one morning to find this outside the house! The road was in need of some major repair work, various roadworks and the effects of last winter’s cold weather had taken its toll, and I was pleased to see that rather than just spray and chip, the road surface was taken off and a new surface laid. It has certainly made it a lot smoother!Repairs 2I just hope it will be a long time before the road has to be dug u0p again!
No sign of another major contract yet, but I have been quite busy with things around the house and a couple of little projects. On thhe home computing front, both the web server and my own computer have been upgraded to Fedora Core 13 and the various applications also updated to include the latest security patches. I have also spent some time tidying up the gallery, tidying it up a little. I have removed some of the older photos and added a few more.

On the health front, I had my ultrasound scan this week. The radiographer said that she couldn’t see anything obvious, so I will have to wait for the doctor’s report to see what that says. If there is nothing obvious and the enzyme levels are still high, I may have to have a CT scan. There wasn’t any blood taken on this visit – the next lot will be when I have the next ECP session in three weeks time.

But before that, I have another trip to France with Mark to his house. I did make a little mix up with the dates 🙁 as I thought I was going today, but it is Monday – and having looked at the weather, I’m quite glad that we aren’t doing a channel crossing today – really wet and miserable – unlike the weather at our destination which is reported to be sunny. Not sure if it will be swimming pool weather though!

Will be on line while I am out there, so

Onwards and Upwards!

Monday… that was BoB!

In this case being a dinner in the mess at Corsham to celebrate the 70th anniversary of The Battle of Britain and to remember the sacrifice made by “The Few”.

BoBI had travelled up to Corsham the day before to finish emptying my flat and then clean it out in preparation for handing back to the letting agency, and also taking the opportunity to go out for a curry. Cleaning and clearing continued on Thursday until it was time to go up to the mess for the dinner.
This picture shows the entrance to the dining marquee decorated to give the impression of a wartime air raid shelter.
Spitfire
It was an excellent evening, with a guest speaker who had been one of “The Few” and whose memory and vivid recollections brought those days back to life. Prior to the dinner we had a fly past by a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, with two views shown here. The noise of the Rolls Royce Merlin engines was incredible as what was once a familiar sight was re-created for us. A truly memorable night, and one in which I met up with my colleagues from when I was a contractor, and also meet up with old friends, one of whom I hadn’t seen for some time.
Spitfire I completed the cleaning on the Friday morning (it was an effort getting up early!) but all was completed on time and the keys returned after the inventorty check. I am sorry to be leaving the area – it has been an enjoyable period and I hope the opportunity to work with the team again may turn up in the near future.

But before all this excitement I had been up to London for a check-up at Guy’s. All OK apart from a strange result from thne ECP blood test that showed an enzyme to be significantly higher that normal. This enzyme is associated with either bone or liver damage. As (as far as I know!) I haven’t suffered any fractures, it points to the liver. While I was in Corsham, the results of a second test showed that the level had dropped but is still abnormally high. The likely cause (given that everything else is normal) is a gall stone, so I will be going for an ultrsound scan just to find out. I will also be going for a lung function test – again routine, but quite welcome for reassurance if I am going to go diving again.

So generally… onwards and upwards.

(And Happy Birthday Lisa)

Tuesday… haematology clinic

It seems ages since I was last at the clinic – probably because it is! All went well, with nothing abnormal found apart from a single liver enzyme taken from my ECP blood test that is 20 times normal value! No explanation especially as everything else was fine. So it is either a false reading forom the lab or someting unexplained. I had blood taken today, so if the same result is observed I may have an ultrasound scan to see if I have a gall stone.

We discussed immunoglobulin again, without any conclusion, and we also talked about a lung function test, which will be useful if I am going to start diving again next year.

So all in all, progress continues and as I left I wished the staff a Happy Christmas as my next appointment isn’t until January!

So O&U!

Thursday… post ECP

A busy bank holiday weekend! I was at a BBQ organised by someone from the Dive Club on Sunday (thank you Dave) an excellent afternoon, finished with a round of croquet).

On Monday I went up to Corsham to start clearing out my flat. I have moved most of the things, but I’ll be going up next week to finish moving out, clean it and hand over the keys. However on the way back I stopped at one of my old work colleagues just in time for a BBQ – thank you Gareth!

Yesterday it was up to St Thomas’s for another ECP session which was successfully completed today. This may possibly be one of the last as I was reviewed by a dermatologist and it has been decided that I will have two more sessions at the six weekly intervals, and then stop for three months with a review next March (3 months on) to see how I am getting on. Another small step in “getting my life back!”, Next week I have a haematolgy review and then I shall be going up to Corsham to finish clearing out the flat.

And on that note, I sent my details off to a diving medicine specialist and had medical approval to go SCUBA diving again – another small step! So this winter I think I shall be doing some refresher training in the pool and I hope get back into the water next year!

Onwards and upwards (although not in a diving sense! 🙂 )

I’m back!

Sorry for the delay in posting, but after my return from France (which now has an edited headline after my ‘Franglais’ was remarked upon by friend Julia!) I had a busy few days doing some work for a client locally, and then I went back to the Dive Dive BoatClub after a longish absence to discover an expedition to Cornwall was being mounted. So although I can’t dive (because I need a diving medical after all the treatment) I did volunteer to go down as expedition cook and general dogsbody. And I had a great time, although cooking two cooked meals a day and sandwiches at lunchtime for half a dozen hungry divers was quite hard work. However I have got the bug back, so I must see about getting a medical, and then getting out and servicing all my dive kit! The picture shows the diveboat – not me driving on this occasion – most of the time I was behind the camera!

I said in a recent post that I needed to do some software upgrading on the server. You may recall that I did an upgrade a few months ago but it stopped half way through so I ended up with a ‘hybrid’ system, partly Linux Fedora Core 10, and partly Core 11 – but as it worked and I was away from home, I left it. However I have now sorted that out and the basic webserver operating system is now Fedora Core 12. I have also updated the photogallery and changed some of the settings. There are one or two new and recent photos of Olivia, but I have removed some of the older ones (or at least removed form general view) but added a few new albums – including one from the last dive Expedition to Porthkerris in 2005. (The last time the club went there too) I’ll be adding more albums later now that the site is running again. In a few moments I’ll be updating the webserving software, and also the WordPress blogging software to the latest and greatest. Most of these are just maintenance upgrades, although the update to the gallery adds a couple of new features – but it all adds to site security.

Nothing much on the job front, but I shall start looking more urgently in September. Meanwhile I have been doing some of the little jobs around the house – sorting out a snaggette on the hot water system, and little things like that.

Good to see you back posting Richard – and it was really good to meet up with you at Simon’s funeral – while a sad occasion, it was great to meet up with people – and I think Simon would have enjoyed the day. And congratulations Gillian!

So on all fronts… onwards and upwards!

Sunday… Alors, je suis revenu!

HouseA bit of a posting gap I’m afraid, but it was ten days of much needed chilling – well, working with Mark on his house. It was also an opportunity to try out a new camera, and I will upload some more photos to the gallery in due course. In fact the whole blog software needs some updating and sorting out.

My main job during the time was cutting the grass with the big boys’ toysToys leaving Mark to do the heavy duty DIY. However we did manage to get some time off, and we were in Pompadour for the Bastille day celebrations, a meal (at a restaurant run my an ex-pat couple and some celebratory fireworks. This is one of several I took during the evening.
Fireworks

It wasn’t all work, and a few beers were consumed round the pool, and I wandered around looking for for subjects. These sweet peas were growing wild in one of the hedges (it must have self seeded) and just invited itself to be photographed. However the best photograph I missed were two entwined snakes down by the pool house – as luck would have it, I didn’t have the camera with me, and they didn’t hang around while I got it!Sweet pea

I flew back last Wednesday (we drove out) and while the French Air Traffickers were having their annual strike, the FlyBe flights were still flying out of Limoges. (In fact the only ones flying out of Lomoges airport – there were some VERY grumpy Ryan Air passengers).

I am now in St Thomas’s having had the first of a delayed ECP session, with the second tomorrow! So, onwards and upwards!

Saturday…phew!

It has been a busy and poignant week. The main ‘events’ have been the funerals of Simon (from BT) and Jane, a friend from University days.

It was an early start on Thursday for the drive down to Faversham from Southampton, but it was a good journey and I arrived at the Church in plenty of time – and just as well as the car park, and subsequently the Church, filled up quickly.
SimonAmong the many people gathered to celebrate Simon’s amazing life were some BT colleagues I had met during the “Get on and Get It” broadband campaign from 2003, including Philippa, Sonya and Sarah. Richard (a frequent commentator on the blog!) was also there, so we had a good catch up. I finally got to meet Christine, Simon’s wife, with whom I had had many chats over the last few weeks. After the service, we went to the burial, in a natural burial ground about 10 minutes drive away. With the dreaded words”You can’t missed it” we eventually arrived towards the end of the interment, but the photoSimonshows some of the many people at the graveside. The burial ground is next to a field where Simon’s horse grazes, and this photograph shows the view from Simon’s resting place. The rather brown grass is testimony to the hot weather! After the burial we went back to Simon’s ‘local’ for a beer and a bite to eat, and an afternoon of remembering. In fact the afternoon of remembering went on until after 8 o’clock, when I dropped Sonya and Sarah at Faversham station before driving up to Corsham in preparation for the trip up to Huddersfield.

So I was up early on Friday to drive to Oxford to meet up with Faith, who drove. It was another poignant occasion, but a lovely service, written by Jane in the last few months. Again it was good to put names to faces, and also to meet up with other friends from University days (Judith, Di, Dina, Sue, John and Paul). While the occasion was sad, Jane had been able to say all the things she wanted to say to her friends, and as before the reminiscing went on into the early evening, before Faith and I made our way back to Oxford, and then (for me) onto Southampton.

I feel a little tired today! Earlier in the week I had made a start on some of the household jobs, the biggest being washing and painting the side of the house, using some staging borrowed from Mark. However next week, Mark and I are going to his house in France to do some work on it, drink a few beers and have a break. I had some hospital appointments, but I have managed to move those, so I will be away for just under a fortnight.

So – onwards and upwards!
