Wednesday… Spring (allegedly!)

Although looking at the sleet falling earlier it is hard to imagine it! But the clocks going forward at the weekend is always welcome!

So another busyish ten days. I enjoyed my Birthday last week, with a trip over for dinner with my sister and her family (thank you Anne!). After that, on Friday, I went up to see my parents where I was joined by Felicity and had a bit of present opening before we set off for the wedding of the daughter of Tom, one of my University flatmates.

We had booked a B&B up the Dales (near Burnsall) in Lower Wharfedale, an area I had frequented in student days. However the passage of time meant that while I recognised various places as mental snapshots, I found it hard to remember the geographical relationship of them to each other!. No matter, I had my trusty Satnav – but unfrtunately that relies on the correct post code to be entered so we ended up (initially) in Skipton.

To cut a long story short, we discovered that there were two villages with the same name, and we went to the wrong one, 17 miles up Wharfedale before we discovered our mistake (with the post code) !7 miles back and we discovered we had been within 3 miles of our destination. Still, spectacular countryside – a pity it was dark!

But next morning as we threw back the curtains in the converted barn that formed part of the B&B – wow – what a view! The wedding itself was lovely, but although the weather was dry and sunny, there was a very cold wind; but despite that, we had a lovely day.

We stayed over on Saturday night, and left on Sunday morning after a great weekend, and after writing a note to ourselves “must go back”. All seemed far more familiar in daylight, although the tourist side seemed far more developed that it was when I was a student.

Other news is that my contract, which finished today, has been renewed, so I shall be in gainful employment for a few more months. I am off home tomorrow, and taking a bit of holiday, but all in all, Onwards and Upwards!

Perhaps more good news Peter the Tories have hinted that they may repeal RI 35 which would make life much safer for you 🙂

I thought you knew that SAT NAVs are only to be used with a map. Even the one on the kit should show you the locality names.

Often I get call from family and friends asking for advice on the best alternative route when hold ups loom. They are told that they need a map and, perhaps, to invest in a machine that had traffic avoidance installed.

Don’t have that problem on the train.

BT have done me a favour and supplied a version 2 Hub which is much prettier and the phones actually work unlike the earlier one. So tonight I have gone wireless, three machines and the printer linked without any wires. Seems just like magic to us simple folk.

Just watching a film clip of Sheerness Dockyard where my Father worked until it closed in 1958

He is in hospital at the moment as suffering from Dementia, sad but at 94 he is entitled to have forgiveness for being ill. Visiting is not much fun as, unlike the EMI residential home, many of the patients are quite young and have very odd perceptions of where they are and what is going on. One chap keeps asking me if I have come by horse as there are some outside……….err there aren’t but it is better not to tell him. Dad just laughs at them. Some of them ever make passable jokes.

Worryingly I seem to fit in and get on with them……….

Time for Damages so off now.

Don’t work too hard Peter you may have to ask Gillian to do your books. Just make sure she is not on the ‘pop’ at the time.

Repeal of IR35 would certainly wouldn’t be a bad thing – neither would a reduction in corporation tax for small businesses!

Well they do say that Sat Navs are no substitute for local knowledge – pity my local knowledge was a bit rusty!

Sorry to hear about your father – although the horses comment reminds me how I wqas diagnosed as short sighted – at a zoo (Whipsnade I think), and my parents pointed out Zebra in the distance – all I could see were what looked like horses.

Gillian doing the books (another job for the weekend) – is she good at cookery? 🙂
